Defining Moments: The Korean War

Leif A. Gruenberg

Description

Defining Moments: The Korean War  tells the story of an event that was, for all intents and purposes, made inevitable when it was agreed at the end of World War II that both U.S. and Soviet forces would occupy the former Japanese colony of Korea.  Although the majority of U.S. and Soviet troops left in 1948, the governments that were formed—communist north of the 38th parallel and a republic to the south—made conflict a foregone conclusion.  This book gives a brief history of Korea, which was once known as “The Land of the Morning Calm.”  The reader is given a history of the arbitrary designation of the 38th parallel as the dividing line between north and south—a decision which took 30 minutes to make.  The events leading to the North Korean invasion of the south are detailed, as well as the United Nations response.  The book looks at all aspects of the war itself, from the moment that U.S. forces entered the conflict in 1950, to the Inchon invasion, to the liberation of Seoul, and to the massive scale of the Chinese entrance into the war.  As well, the book examines the tumultuous command of U.N. forces (including the removal of Douglas MacArthur as Commander-in-Chief in 1951), the two years of bloody stalemate, the atrocities committed by both sides during the war, and the ceasefire which ended the fighting—but did not resolve the conflict.  Finally, the book looks at the legacy of the Korean War—which continues to this day to be a potentially renewable major conflict.  This volume also includes numerous biographies of individuals who were noteworthy in the Korean War (including Harry Truman, Kim Il Sung and Dwight Eisenhower), and primary sources which illuminate what the participants in the events were thinking—as they were living through them.
